A tourist is looking for a restaurant in a Spanish town. He stops a passerby and asks for diretions.

Tourist:	Perdone, ¿hay algún restaurante por aquí?	Pardon me, are there some restaurants this way?
Passerby:	Pues, el restaurante El Faro es muy bueno y está muy cerca de aquí. Conoce usted la Calle Esmeralda?	Well, the El Faro restaurant is very good and is nearby. Do you know Emerald Street?
Tourist:	No, no la conozco. No soy de aquí	No, I don’t know it. I am not from here.
Passerby:	Es la segunda calle a la derecha. El restaurante está casi al final de la calle.	It is the second street to the right. The restaurant is almost at the end of the street.
Tourist:	¿La segunda calle a la derecha?	The second street to the right?
Passerby:	Sí, sí, está a unos cien metros de aquí.	Yes, yes, it is about 100 meters from here.
Tourist:	Pues, muchas gracias.	Well, thanks a lot.
Passerby:	De nada.	You are welcome.

Practice reading the above dialogue with a partner until you are comfortable and say it without looking at the text. Then vary the conversation using some of the expressions below or others of your own.

Now look at this at a simple street map or the one in the text book and make up similar conversations with another partner. Use some of these words and phrases, as well as others from the previous exercises.

Read the directions given by José, who lives in Quito, Exuador, to his friend Cristina. Then use the text as a model to write direction on how to get to your own place.

Mi apartamento está en la Calle Sucre, 41. Es el apartamento 50, que está en el quinto piso a la izquierda del ascensor. El edificio está a dos cuadras de la parada del autobús No 12, enfrente del Supermercado Quiteño.

My apartment is on 41 Sucre Street. It is apartment 50, which is on the fifth floor to the left from the elevator. The building is two blocks from Bus Stop #12, in front of Quiteño Supermarket.

A motorist driving to Benagalbón asks a police officer for directions.

Conductor:	Por favor, ¿cuál es la carretera para Benagalbón?	Please, what is the route to Benagalbón?
Guardia:	Tiene que tomar la carretera que va a Borge, aquí a la derecha.	You have to take the route that goes toward Borge, here to the right.
Conductor:	¿Está muy lejos?	Is it very far?
Guardia:	Pues no, está a cinco kilómetros de aquí.	Well no, it is about five kilometers from here.

A motorist is going to Puebla de Montalbán, a small town in central Spain. He stops to ask a police officer for directions.

Conductor:	Perdone, ¿por dónde se va a Puebla de Montalbán?	Pardon me, which way goes to Puebla de Montalbán?
Guardia:	Para ir a Puebla de Montalbán tiene que tomar la carretera 502. Ud. Sigue por esta misma calle hasta el final y luego doble a la derecha.	In order to go to Puebla de Montalbán you have to take route 502. You follow this same road until the end then turn to the right.
Conductor:	¿A qué distancia está mas o menos?	What is the distance, more or less?
Guardia:	Está a cincuenta kilómetros aproximadamente.	It is approximately about 50 kilometers,

You are in a Spanish town, driving to Navahermosa, which is 70 kilometers away. You stop a passerby and ask or directions. With another student, make up a conversation like the one above. In order to get to Navahermosa, you must take route 401.

Unit 4b-3.

Someone flying from Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina, to New York, asks an airline employee how long it takes to fly between the two cities.

Viajero:	Perdone, ¿cuántas horas de vuelo hay entre Buenos Aires y Nueva York?	Pardon me, how many flight hours are there between Buenos Aires and New York?
Empleada:	Diez horas y media.	Ten and one half hours.
Viajero:	Gracias.	Thank you.

Now practice with another student asking and telling how long it takes to fly between different cities in your country or between your country and another. Use also the following useful expressions.
