Tips For Becoming A Successful Parent Of A College Student!

Sending your son or daughter off to school can be overwhelming and challenging, but also very rewarding. We want students to get the most out of their education and College experience. Below are a few tips to help you become a successful parent of a Goldey-Beacom College student.

  • Write your student a letter or send them a care package when they least expect it.
  • Listen to them. Talk to and with them, not at them.
  • When they call home unexpectedly, don’t panic.
  • If you intend to visit the campus, let them know you are coming. You will be unable to gain access to the residence halls without the student's consent and presence.
  • Be supportive with the academic decisions the student makes.
  • Don’t try to obtain information regarding a student without the student’s consent. All advisors must have written permission from the student to share any personal information concerning the student’s performance or behavior.
  • If you have two or more in college, don’t vocally compare each student’s performance to each other’s or to anyone else.
  • Know about campus resources and encourage your student to use them. Encourage them to talk to their advisor about any concerns they have.
  • Ask specific questions related to your student’s academics. For example, How is your English class going? Or Where do you usually study?
