Internship Opportunities

All undergraduate students are encouraged to participate in the Internship Program prior to graduating.  It is not too early to start researching companies that offer internship within the first year at GBC.  For a list of active internships available to students, please check the GBC online job board through College central.com.

Attend our Annual Internship Opportunity Fair held every January.  Network with employers who have existing internship/ co-op programs.

Internships

  • What is the Internship program?

    • An internship is a unique educational plan for which the student earns academic credit. It integrates classroom study with planned supervised work experience.  This field experience allows students to acquire practical skills, be exposed to the reality of the business world beyond the boundaries of the campus, enhance self-awareness, and help provide direction with regard to career choice.

    • Internships may vary.  All are beneficial from a learning perspective but sometimes do not earn pay. It depends on the company offering the opportunity.  Both volunteer and paid internships are acceptable for academic credit providing the working hour requirements are fulfilled within the timeframe given.

  • How does the Internship program benefit the student?

    • An internship helps the student enhance his/her professional skills with actual “hands-on” experience in his/her chosen field.

    • An internship gives the student an inside view of the business world of work.

    • An internship permits the student to apply the principles and theories taught in the classroom to real-life projects.

    • An internship influences the personal, career development and academic performance of the student.

    • An internship gives students the opportunity to be considered for permanent employment if they successfully complete their assignments.

    • An internship fosters the development of communication skills by giving students experience in personal interaction in career settings.

    • An internship is a way for the student to “test” out his/her chosen field to make sure it is a good fit.  It gives the student exposure to other people doing the same type of work, and helps the student decide if this is the right career for him/her before accepting a permanent position.

    • An internship is an excellent resume builder, since most employers make hiring decisions based upon prior work related experience.  It allows the student to stand out from the rest of the competition when searching for permanent work.

  • How do students find the appropriate internship?

    • It is important for the student to develop an action plan to get an internship. Although a student must have completed half of his/her credits for degree, it is not too early to start researching companies that offer internship within the first year at GBC.  It may take a few months to find the right internship.

    • A student may want to define the goals for his/her internship. Some questions to consider include:

      • What do you want to do in your internship?

      •  What industry or type of company do you want to intern with?

      • When do you want to participate in the fall, spring or summer?

      • Do you want to put in 300 hours or 600 hours for internship within a semester?

    • After the goals are established, some steps in getting the right internship to follow include:

      • Visit the Career Services Center

      • Look at the internship opportunities in the binders and job posting web site.

      •  Research internship prospects through Internet sites, company contacts, and directory of employer contacts in the Career Services Office.

      • Attend the Internship Opportunity Fair in January to meet with all the employers who offer internship opportunities.

      • Network for internship opportunities through family, friends, faculty, advisors, student groups and community organizations.

      • Apply with an updated resume and cover letter once the targeted companies are established.

      • Follow up with every employer if you have not heard back within a reasonable time of two weeks.

      • Pay attention to deadlines for applying to companies and deadlines for receiving credit for the semester.
  • Can students do two separate internships at two different companies?

    • Absolutely, students can participate in two 3-credit internships within two semesters with two different companies.  It is highly encouraged for students to be exposed to two different companies, taking on different projects to add the variety of experience to their resumes. Students can eventually become more marketable when graduating with more experience in their field.

  • Can students use their full time job as an internship?

    • Students who are currently working full time at a job that is directly related to their field of study can use their job as an internship.  However, the employer must assign the student an additional project or responsibility directly related to the area of concentration that is different from the student’s daily job responsibilities during the internship time frame.  The student will still have to meet the hour requirements by counting the hours after the internship paperwork for registration is turned in, and follow the same procedures as for any internship.

Eligibility

  • Who is eligible for the Internship program?

    • Any Goldey-Beacom College student matriculating in an Associate of Science degree or Bachelors of Science degree program or in a GBC Certificate program may make application to the Internship program.  Students are required to hold a GPA of 2.75 and to have completed at least half of their degree requirements at time of application.

  • What are the requirements for Academic credit?

    • To be considered for internship credit, the work must not only be directly related to the student’s major field of study, but also be an integral or important part of his/her studies.  For the benefit of the student’s educational experience, it is recommended that the work site be an established business with a minimum of 10 employees to provide the appropriate training and guidance to the student’s learning objectives.  Additionally, for the safety of our students, the internship work site must be non-residential.

    • Students can register for up to 6 academic credits for internship. Students must satisfy a work requirement of 300 hours in order to earn three credits or 600 hours to earn six credits. The work component may be completed either in one semester or two semesters depending upon the scope of the job.  The student must complete a written paper under the direction of the Chief Academic Officer for each 3 credit course.  Students who are in the Associates of Science degree program can earn only 3 credits of internship and can only do an additional 3 credits for the Bachelor of Science degree internship.

    • A student who has been given permission to earn internship credits should meet with his/ her advisor before registering for classes for the semester in which academic credits are to be earned.  The Chief Academic Officer will assign the appropriate course ID and number of credits to the student's scheduling worksheet in order to confirm internship credits.  Keep in mind; internship credits will be slotted in a student's curriculum for elective credit only.  The student will pay for internship credits at the current rate per credit hour.

  • Who will grade job performance?

    • Before the completion of the internship assignment, the job site supervisor will evaluate the job performance of the student and any work assigned to the student in relation to her/his internship position.  The supervisor will also fill out an evaluation form and return it to the Career Services Office.

    • The student will receive a final grade based upon the evaluation of his work on the job by the supervisor and of the written work required by the Chief Academic Officer.  That grade will either be a grade of P (satisfactory completion) or F (failing completion).  Both grades must be P (satisfactory completion) in order for the student to receive credits.

    • A grade of P (satisfactory completion) is not calculated in the student’s cumulative grade point average.  However, an F (failing completion) grade does count against the student’s GPA, though no credits are earned.

  • What standards of conduct must students observe?

    • The internship student needs to keep in mind that he/she represents Goldey-Beacom College at all times.  The student is expected to conduct himself/herself in a courteous and businesslike manner and to dress appropriately for the world of work.  The student must also adhere to all of the policies and procedures put forth by the employing organization.

  • What do students do next?

    • Once the student has been approved for academic credit for the internship assignment and has reported for his/her first day of employment, he/she must fulfill this contractual obligation unless the Career Services Office and the Chief Academic Officer release him/ her from this obligation.  In addition, the student is required to notify the Career Services Office immediately if any problems should develop with his/ her assignment.

    • The student is required to be on time and at work every day in order to fulfill the obligations of the employment contract and the Internship Student Agreement.  The student should notify his immediate supervisor immediately should illness or an emergency situation prevent her/him from reporting to work.  The student is required to notify the Career Services Office should any extended absence from the workplace be contemplated.

  • Where do students apply for the Internship program?

    • Any student interested in earning internship credits should make an appointment to speak with the Career Services Office.  It is the student’s responsibility to find his/her own internship.  The student should have a current resume and other necessary materials such as grade transcript or list of references for interviewing with companies.  Decisions to hire are the sole venue of the prospective employer.

  • How do I complete my internship for a grade?
    • At least 2 weeks prior to the end of your internship, you must turn in to Career Services your completed term paper and employer evaluation form. The Academic Dean uses both to determine a Pass or Fail grade which will appear on your Campus Web account online once graded.

  • Where can I find the paperwork to apply?
