2004 season recap
The 2004 Goldey-Beacom Women’s Cross Country team posted a seventh place finish at the 2004 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Championships at Belmont Plateau. Following the loss of his top two runners from last season, head coach Kelly Parsley saw his two freshmen – Katie Lewis (Newark, DE) and Jessica Kaszeta (Wilmington, DE) – finished 1-2 in all eight races in 2004. Lewis posted seven first-place finishes and along the way established a new school-record in the 5K when she finished the CACC Championships with a time of 22:04.35, earning her all-conference honors. Kaszeta, meanwhile, posted a first-place finish at the William Patterson Invitational while junior Brandi Ash (Dagsboro, DE) finish third among GBC runners in all eight races in 2004. With all but one runners returning for 2005, Parsley appears to have laid a solid foundation for years to come.
The woman’s cross-country team in 2003 made history by having its first all-conference performer Freshman Jacki Justison, who finished runner-up in her Central Atlantic Conference debut. Justison is the first woman in Goldey-Beacom history to achieve that honor. Also to her credit she received CACC Runner of the Week honors in week seven of the season, and she broke the school record for 5000 meters running a 20:59 on a tough Belmont Plateau course. Junior Lindsay Hageman also had a great season, placing 24th in the William Patterson Invitational, and 16th in the Central Atlantic Conference, one place away from making the All-Conference team. The Lady Lightning finished as high as third place in the Wilmington College Cross-Country Invitational in late September. That was the highest finish in the short two-year team history. “Our expectations were higher this year”, notes coach Parsley “we were able to achieve a lot of the goals set for us at the beginning of the year.” The Lightning will not graduate a single runner from this 2003 season. “We were young and inexperienced this year, next year looks to be very promising,“ added Parsley. “Look for the Lightning to make great strides in 2004.”
