Team History
2006-2007 Season
Recap
The 2006-07 campaign proved to be the most successful season in the
program's seven year history. With Head Coach Jennifer Smith at the
helm, the Lightning set a program record for most overall and conference
wins in a season, finishing with an 18-11 overall and 14-8 conference
mark. Six of the team's eleven losses were by ten points or less. The
Lightning once again quailified for the conference playoffs for the
second season in as many years, this time advancing futher then ever
before to the semi-final round. The Lightning entered the CACC
tournament as the fifth seed and defeated fourth seeded Dominican
College on their home floor, 71-49. Senior Cherrise Graham was named to
the Darktronics All-Region Second Team, All-CACC First Team, and was
named CACC Player of the Week four times and ECAC Player of the Week
once. Junior Toni Jones was named to the All-CACC Second Team for the
second season in a row and reached the 1,000 point milestone. Senior Kim
Rowley became the first player in the program's history to reach the
1,000 career rebound milestone.
2005-2006 Season Recap
The
2005-2006 season saw the Lightning qualify for the CACC Tournament for
the first time in school history as they finished with a 6-22 (6-18
CACC) record under first-year coach Jennifer Smith. The team earned wins
over Georgian Court, Nyack, Felician, Wilmington and Post University. Three
players finished the season in double-digit scoring; Toni Jones (17.5),
Kim Rowley (12.9) and Natasha Scott (11.7). All three players will
return for next season.
2004-2005 Season Recap
The 2004-2005 season was
not what the team had set their goals on as they finished with a 5-22 (4-18
CACC) record under first-year coach Charlie Baltimore. The team earned wins
over Columbia Union, Dominican, Georgian Court, Nyack, and Post University.
The team lost by an average 17.3 ppg.
2003-2004 Season Recap
The
2003-2004 season was a challenging beginning to life in the NCAA for the
Lady Lightning. In it’s first full season of NCAA Division II competition
the Lightning posted a 9-17 record overall and an 8-14 record in CACC
action.
The
teams’ record this season does not indicate just how competitive they were.
Seven of the conference losses were by an average of 6 points, proving that
this squad was extremely competitive. Early in conference action, the
Lightning beat perennial conference power Caldwell for their first ever
finish over the Cougars. Probably the most exciting game of the conference
season was a double-overtime victory over Georgian Court College. Not only
was it an exciting win, but the Lady Lightning set the single game
Goldey-Beacom College record for most points scored with 98.
As
far as individual honors go, members of the Lady Lightning made the weekly
honor roll in 6 of the possible 15 weeks. In December, senior Erin
Calloway became the inaugural member of the GBC women’s basketball 1000
Point Club. She ends her career with 1,216 points. Freshman Kim Rowley
became the first GBC women’s basketball player to be honored as an
All-Conference player, earning her spot on the 2nd Team All-CACC
for her hard work under the net. Brianna Maloney also added her weight
under the basket, finishing 11th in the CACC in Rebounding and 8th
in Blocked shots. Junior point Lindsay Hageman put forward some very solid
performances throughout the season, earning a spot on the CACC Honor Roll
mid-season. Other contributors to the team this season were Seniors Julie
Parseghian and Lauren Hicks, Junior Tiffany Ervin, Sophomore Michelle
Azzanesi, and Freshmen Erin Mahoney and April Yanacek.
2002-2003 Season Recap
The
2002-2003 Women’s Basketball season was an exciting one for all involved.
The team’s dedication and determination to be competitive finally paid off
as the Lightning made its first appearance in the NAIA North Independent
Regional Tournament as the number 3 seed in only its third season of
competition. The squad finished third in the tournament, winning its first
play-off game ever over Nyack College.
Senior Brianna Maloney made the NAIA All-North Independent Region Team and
Coach Frank Aiello was voted the NAIA All-North Independent Region Coach of
the Year. Coach Aiello spoke of his team in the post-season stating, “I am
most proud of the fact that the team has maintained an overall team GPA of
about 3.4 throughout the past three seasons. These young ladies have
represented the college very well, and we should be extremely proud of what
they are doing not only for the basketball program, but also for the college
and the GBC community.” As a testament to the character of Coach Aiello’s
program, the team earned for its third consecutive year the CACC Team
Sportsmanship Award as voted by its peers within the conference.
In
2003-2004, Coach Aiello has handed over his head coaching responsibilities
to his former Assistants Mary Malone and Brandon Baffone. In parting he
commented on the program that he was so instrumental in creating, ‘I believe
the program will continue to be successful under the guidance of Mary Malone
and Brandon Baffone. I wish them all continued success in years to come.
Overall, I couldn’t be more proud of what out program has accomplished these
past three years. This team has endured and succeeded beyond all
expectations, and these outstanding student-athletes have left their mark on
Delaware basketball as well as in our conference.”
2001-2002 Season
Recap
The Lady Lightning’s 2nd season met with even
greater success than anyone expected. The team was extremely competitive and
won 10 games, surprising some of our competition and narrowly missing the
conference playoffs by only 1 game. Several key injuries, including the
mid-season loss of our point guard Lindsey Hageman (Fr.) to a shoulder
injury, factored heavily in some of our close losses. But the team as a
whole showed considerable depth of character and really pulled together to
attain our goal of 10 or more wins in only our second season of play. The
program continues to grow, and our players are getting better with every
practice and game. We are becoming a team to be reckoned with in the future
in the CACC.
2000-2001 Season Recap
The Lightning had a surprisingly successful
inaugural season. The team was small, consisting of only 7 players. Every
member of the team contributed to what we feel was a great start to our
women’s basketball program. The goal of the coaching staff was to win 5 or 6
games in our first year of competition. The players not only achieved this
goal, but went one step further, finishing their 1st year of competition
with a 7-20 record. Considering the caliber of competition in the CACC, and
at the Division II level of basketball in general, the players and coaching
staff should be commended for their hard work and achievements over this
very successful season.
