2007 Recap

The Goldey-Beacom College softball faced many injuries throughout the 2007 season and they directly reflected upon their record. The team earned wins over Simmons College, Columbia Union College, and Nyack College. Kendra Russell led the team with a .380 batting average and also tallied 38 hits, 20 RBI’s, and 5 homeruns on the season. Sarah Gehman was second on the team with a .349 batting average and contributed 37 hits. On the mound, Kristen Ferdeci pitched a team high 94 innings. She finished with a 4.77 ERA and 63 strikeouts.

2006 Recap

The Lightning softball team qualified for the CACC Playoffs for the third consecutive season and had three players named to the All-Conference Team. Sophomore Kendra Russell (New Castle, DE/Padua Academy) was named to the First Team at the first base position. She has 42 hits in 120 at-bats, 10 doubles, 24 RBI’s, and 92 put-outs on the season. She has a .350 batting average and .974 fielding percentage. Senior Brandy Ash (Dagsboro, DE/Indian River) was named to the Second Team at the DP position and has 39 hits and 17 RBI’s on the season with a .345 batting average. From the mound she has a 4.57 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 67 innings pitched. Sophomore Megan Harper (Atco, NJ/Camden Catholic) also made the Second Team at the catcher position. Harper has a .307 batting average along with 35 hits and 25 RBI’s. She leads the team with a .975 fielding percentage and has 99 put-outs. The team earned 14 conference wins, the most since the 2001 season and took one game from powerhouse Caldwell College, 1-0.

2004 Recap

The Lightning softball team began the season with a trip to the Carolinas and finished with a trip to the CACC Championship tournament in Caldwell, NJ.  The team boasted a five game winning streak and a double header victory over West Chester University.  During the last regularly scheduled contest against in-state conference rival, Wilmington College, the Lightning needed a victory to move into post season play, and in a 6th inning comeback overturned a 2-run lead to claim an 8-3 victory.

The team received strong leadership from seniors Julie Parseghian (catcher) and Stephanie Dreibelbis (1st base); both will be genuinely missed next season.  Both Julie and Steph played an integral part in making the Lightning softball a competitive program these past four years.  Juniors Holly Kimble (3rd base), Tiffany Frick (pitcher/outfielder), and Devon O’Brien (centerfield), gave steady overall performances both on the field and at bat.  Sophomore Andrea Connor (utility) brought her versatility to the table this season, playing two different field positions and pinch hitting when called upon.  Brandy Ash (shortstop/pitcher) had an exceptional offensive year slugging .491 all the while adjusting to her new fielding position.  We received outstanding performances from our freshman class.  Rebecca Dooley (pitcher) closed out the year with a 1.98 ERA and two shutouts.  Janelle Weiser (outfielder) and Sarah Gehman (2nd base) took over the final two fielding positions and Jennifer Hunt (DH/Utility) and Kelly Halfen (Pitcher/DH) took turns rounded out the batting order.  All members of the team played with lots of drive and desire.

Assistant Coaches Shannon Dubinsky, Wayne Sands, Louise Blackwood, and Nancy Melvin have all assisted in the development of this young team.  “The team never gave up,” stated Coach Kwoka, after her two close losses in the conference playoffs, “and that determination is something the team can build upon.”

History of the program

The first Lightning squad started out impressively in 1991 defeating the district champion Wilmington College in the first round of the NAIA district championships.  Our team has continued to improve with each new season. In the spring of 1995, the Lightning fought its way clear to its first NAIA Northeast Regional Independent Championship title, a title which it also won in 1997.

A true reflection of the quality of a softball team is the strength of its schedule. Goldey-Beacom has one of the toughest schedules in the area, competing with such teams as West Chester University, Shippensburg University and conference powerhouses Georgian Court College and Caldwell College.

Maintaining Goldey-Beacom College's tradition of drawing quality student-athletes has always been the athletics program's primary concern.  In 2002, the school was listed in the top 10% of NAIA Division II schools for its overall student-body graduation rate of 89%. Also in 2002, the Lightning placed 5th on the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Top 10 Academic Teams list with a team GPA of 3.415.  Lightning athletes are encouraged to strive for success in all venues they approach, whether on the playing field, in the classroom or in the business world.

The Goldey-Beacom softball team is coached by
Mary Pat Kwoka. The team draws its student-athletes from Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.
