TAKOMA PARK, MD (April 10, 20005) – Sophomore Kelly Halfen (Newark, DE) went a combined 4-for-7 with five RBI to
help Goldey-Beacom College sweep a doubleheader from Columbia Union College,
winning game one 9-0 and game two 7-4 in non-conference softball action in
Maryland.
Halfen went
2-for-3 with two RBI in the opener and 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs
scored in the nightcap to help the Lightning (9-11) snap a two-game losing
skid.
Senior Devon O’Brien (Wilmington,
DE) and sophomore Sarah Gehman (King of Prussia,
PA) each had two RBI in game
one, which was called after five innings. Senior Tiffany Frick (Pennsauken,
NJ) picked up her fourth win
of the season, striking out six in five innings of work.
In game
two, junior Lori Knabb (Paulsboro, NJ)
went 2-for-2 with two RBI while Gehman also posted an RBI for the Lightning. Sarah
Gaffney and Rachel King each knocked in two runs for Columbia Union, who fell
to 3-16 with the losses.
Freshman Kendra Russell (New Castle, DE)
notched her fifth win of the season in the nightcap, scattering four hits in
her five innings of work while striking out three. Junior Brandi Ash (Dagsboro, DE), making her season debut for GBC,
pitching the final two innings of game two, allowing four hits and four runs
(three earned) with two strikeouts. Gaffney pitched both games for Columbia
Union, allowing a total of 23 hits, 16 runs (12 earned) in 12 innings of work,
striking out one.
