WILMINGTON, DE (May 1, 2005) – The Goldey-Beacom College softball team split a Sunday doubleheader with Dominican College, winning game one 5-1 before dropping game two 4-0 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action at the GBC Softball Complex.

The Lightning built a 4-0 lead in game one behind an RBI single by freshman winning pitcher Kendra Russell (New Castle, DE), a passed ball by Dominican catcher Crystal Helmke that allowed junior Lori Knabb (Paulsboro, NJ) to score from third following a triple, and a two-run single by senior Tiffany Frick (Pennsauken, NJ).

The Chargers (16-22, 6-10 CACC) struck back for a run in the top of the sixth on an RBI double by Michelle Krupna, but the Lightning got the run back in the bottom half of the inning when senior Devon O’Brien (Wilmington, DE) drew a bases-loaded walk.

Russell improved to 15-7 on the season with the win, allowing six hits and one run in seven innings of work, striking out eight. Michelle Bark suffered the loss for Dominican, allowing 11 hits and five earned runs while striking out two in six innings.

In the nightcap, the Chargers scored three runs in the top of the second of the second off Frick, chasing her after just two innings. Kim Cornacchio led off the top of the second with a triple and scored on a throwing error by Frick to make it 1-0. Katie Farrugia followed with a double to score Kristine Knuth and Leah Wilhelmsen and push the lead to 3-0. Knuth added an RBI single in the top of the sixth to make it a 4-0 lead and cap the scoring.

Frick fell to 7-9 with the loss, allowing four runs (three earned) in two innings of work while Christine Stathes picked up the win, allowing just five hits in 7 IP.
