CALDWELL, NJ (May 6, 2005) – The Goldey-Beacom College softball team defeated Post University 2-1 in nine innings in its first-round game of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Tournament before dropping its second game to Caldwell College 9-1 in five innings Thursday afternoon at Caldwell Field.

The Lightning broke a scoreless tie with the Eagles in the top of the seventh when freshman catcher Megan Harper (Atco, NJ) walked and scored on an error by first baseman Megan Pappas. Post rallied to tie the game in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI double by Nicky Castellucci, but Goldey-Beacom took the lead for good in the top of the ninth when senior Holly Kimble (Millsboro, DE) walked, stole second and later scored on a wild pitch by Crista Holtom.

Freshman Kendra Russell (New Castle, DE) picked up her 16^th win of the season for the Lightning, allowing five hits and one run in nine innings of work, striking out two. Holtom, meanwhile, allowed five hits and two runs – both unearned – while striking out five.

Trailing Caldwell 1-0 in the top of the fourth, the Lightning tied the game at one on an RBI single by senior Tiffany Frick (Pennsauken, NJ), but the Cougars struck back for six runs in the bottom of the inning and cruised the rest of the way. The big blow came off the bat of Carrie Flasphaler, who belted a three run home run off Russell.

Jessica Saunders picked up the win for Caldwell, allowing four hits and one run while striking out eight in five innings of work. Russell, meanwhile, allowed eight hits and seven runs in 3.0 IP while junior Brandy Ash (Dagsboro, DE) allowed four hits and two runs in 1.1 IP.

The No. 5 seed Lightning return to action Friday afternoon when they take on No. 6 Wilmington College at 11 a.m. in an elimination game for both teams.
