WILMINGTON, DE (September 15, 2004) – Jared Hughart scored the game-winning goal just over five minutes into the second half and goalkeepers Josh Ruggerio and Dan Mangat combined to make 11 saved as Wilmington College downed Goldey-Beacom, 2-1, in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men’s soccer action Wednesday afternoon at a rain-soaked Nancy Churchman Sawin Athletic Field.

Senior Dan DiGiacobbe (Newark, DE) scored for the Lightning, who have dropped five-straight games. Freshman Brett Kirkland (Severna Park, MD) was credited with the assist on DiGiacobbe’s second goal of the season.

Wilmington opened the scoring at 42:40 of the first half when Jeremy Doucette poked the ball past Lightning goalkeeper Bryan Rudden (Landenberg, PA) to give the Wildcats (2-2-1) a 1-0 lead going into the half. Hughart’s goal increased the Goldey-Beacom (1-5) deficit to 2-0 before DiGiacobbe’s goal at 73:38 brought the Lightning to within one.

All three goalkeepers were solid throughout and spectacular at times. Rudden finished the afternoon with 10 saves while Ruggerio, who played the entire first half, finished with eight and Mangat, who played the second stanza, recorded three.

The game was marred by fouls as the Wildcats were charged with 22 - including two yellow cards – while the Lightning received six and one yellow card.

The Lightning return to action Sunday when they travel to New York to take on Nyack College at 2 p.m.
