Chuck Hammond, Head Coach

Chuck Hammond, the fifth head coach in the history of the men’s program, enters his fifth season at the head of the program.  Hammond has revitalized the Lightning program into one of the top teams in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC).

Upon being hired in 2003, Hammond took over a team that had finished with an overall record of 1-23 the previous season and had won a combined total of 9 games in the previous three seasons.

In just four seasons, Hammond has become Goldey-Beacom College’s career leader in wins.

This past season, the Lightning reached a number of milestones.  Hammond led the lightning into the playoffs for the first time since 1999.  Finishing fourth in the CACC with a 15-12 record (11-9 CACC), the Lightning hosted their first playoff game in school history.   The team also captured its first ever top 10 ranking in the NCAA Division II Northeast Region.  With victories over 2 NCAA Division II tournament teams, the Lightning were invited to participate in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division II Championship.  The Lightning defeated Molloy College 86-70 in the ECAC Finals to garner their first post-season championship.

In 2005-2006,  having a team comprised of four new starters from the year before, the Lightning came together to lead the Central Athletic Collegiate Conference (CACC) in scoring defense, allowing only 65.7 points per game.  In addition, they finished first in defensive rebounding (30.8) and second in rebounding margin (+3.8).  Finishing with a record of 15-12, the Lightning completed its first season in program history with a winning record.  Goldey-Beacom’s 15 wins represented the most wins for the program since (1999-2000) when they won 17 games and were coached by former coach and graduate Roger Palmer.  In addition, Goldey-Beacom College defeated an NCAA Tournament team (Bridgeport University) for the first time in school history.  For his efforts, Hammond was named the 2005-2006 CACC coach of the year.

Other accomplishments include winning the CACC Team Sportsmanship Award in 2003, 2004 and 2006.   Hammond also is a three year member of the NCAA Division II Northeast Region Basketball Committee.  An active contributor to the community, Hammond was named to the “2006-2007 Who’s Who among America’s Teachers” for his contributions off the court.  In addition to the on court turn around, the Lightning have begun to flourish in the classroom. Their 2.91 team GPA in the fall of 2006 was the highest in the program’s history.

Prior to Goldey-Beacom College, Hammond served as an assistant coach to Herb Magee at Philadelphia University. At Philadelphia University, Hammond was the Ram's recruiting coordinator and was able to help the Ram’s land future Division II All-American and the 2005-2006 Co-Division II Player of the year, Tayron Thomas.  His recruiting classes helped Philadelphia University garner a preseason No. 1 national ranking by Street & Smith's magazine prior to the 2004-2005 season.   Under the tutelage of Coach Magee, Hammond learned from one of the best coaches in the country.  Coach Magee has amassed over 800 victories and is the All-Time leader in NCAA Division II victories.

Hammond is a member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC).

The Blackwood, NJ native (Paul VI HS) earned his bachelors degree in psychology from Philadelphia University in 1999 and his Master’s in Education from Temple University in 2002.  At Temple University, Hammond specialized in Sports Psychology and focused on anxiety and the recruiting process.  His thesis was part of a study trying to get a better understanding of the process that recruited student-athletes experience.

Hammond and his wife Ryan live in Aston, Pa.  They have a daughter, Taylor.

Preston Burroughs, Assistant Coach

Entering his fifth season with the Lightning, Burroughs has been a constant for the Men’s basketball program and for Head Coach Chuck Hammond. The former Misericordia College Basketball Star is responsible for post player development and defense. “Coach Burroughs has a tremendous way about him. He can really relate to the guys on our team and they respect him tremendously,” Hammond said. “His involvement with our team has been invaluable as a teacher, mentor and friend.” Burroughs and his wife Barbara have two children, Jordan (9) and Kayla (6) and reside in Bear, Delaware.

Justin Dussault, Assistant Coach

Joining the Lightning for his first season, Dussault was previously an assistant coach at the basketball prep powerhouse, The Tilton School.  At the Tilton School he was responsible for the recruitment of prospective student-athletes, including three Division I prospects this past season.  Prior to The Tilton School, Dussault was the Head Varsity Coach at High Point High School in Beltsville, Maryland.  With the Lightning, Dussault will serve as the recruiting coordinator and will be responsible for assisting with the development of the teams guards.  The former University of North Florida star also works many prestigious summer camps such as “Eastern Invitational Basketball Camp.”   “Justin has a bright future in this business.  He works extremely hard with recruiting and has made some really great contacts.  With his playing experience and work ethic, Justin is a great addition to our staff,” Hammond said.

Jasen Maciey, Assistant Coach

After a stellar senior season in which he helped lead the Lightning to their highest seeding in the CACC conference tournament and an ECAC championship on the floor, Maciey is now back to assist Coach Chuck Hammond on the bench.  As one of the top shooters in the conference last season, Maciey will be responsible for the development of the team’s guards.  Hammond noted, “Jasen always brought a lot of energy to our practices and games.  I expect him to bring the same enthusiasm as a coach.  He has a good knowledge of the game that will help the development of our team.”

Mike Shepherd, Assistant Coach

Joining the Lightning for his first season, Shepherd was previously the Head Boy’s Basketball Coach at McKean HS.  As the head coach of McKean HS, Shepherd led them to one of their most successful seasons in school history.  The Temple University (1996) graduate is also a teacher at McKean HS.  He is most notably known for his role in serving the community as the Head Coach of the PAL of Delaware boy’s basketball AAU team.  Over his tenure as Head Coach and Director of Operations of the PAL of Delaware, Shepherd has helped place over 40 of his former players at the Division I and II level.  “Mike Shepherd has established himself as someone who volunteers so much of his time to give back to the community.  Having been part of one of the most respected AAU programs in the region, Mike’s teams were comprised primarily of Delaware student-athletes.  Serving as a mentor to many of his former players, he always stressed the importance of education.  Using basketball as a motivator, Coach Shepherd has helped a lot of young men achieve success in the classroom they might not have known they were capable of” Hammond said.  Shepherd will serve as the Strength and Conditioning Coach for the Lightning while also focusing as a Nutrition Coach.  Shepherd owns his Master’s of Education from the University of Delaware (2003) and lives in Wilmington with his wife Leilani.
