1999-2000 season outlook. GBC applied for and was granted provisional membership into NCAA Division II. "What this means is that we will be dual members of both the NAIA and the NCAA for four years, then full NCAA membership," said Coach Colella. As the team continues to build on the successful foundation that was put in place last year, the announcement of the team moving to NCAA II has aided Coach Colella's recruiting efforts. In addition to the seven returning players, this year's recruits include 6'5", 230 lb. Andre Gibson, 6'0" shooting guard J.C. Lenk, and point guard A.J. Colella. Gibson, a strong defender and rebounder, enters his freshman year following a state championship senior year at William Penn High School in New Castle, Delaware. Lenk, from Madison, Ohio, is an incredible three point bomber, as well as a very intelligent player. Point guard A.J. Colella, out of St. Mark's High School in Newark, Delaware, brings excellent ball handling skills, a very good outside shot, but most importantly, a strong grasp on the team concept. "We had a good recruiting class - all the freshmen (like last year), to whom we offered athletic scholarships, also received academic scholarships."
"We had a good recruiting class, all the freshmen (like last year) who we offered athletic scholarships to, also got academic scholarships. Last year we were pretty much guard oriented, while this year we hope to get a little stronger inside. With the addition of Gibson we are on the right track; however, we are still in search of a couple of big men who want to play ball, but are also looking for a great education."
GBC's schedule this year is even more challenging than last year's; with 14 games against teams that were nationally ranked at some point last year. "I asked the players, if they wanted me to soften the schedule, but they wanted to play 'up'. A couple of schools dropped us so we put in Clarion and got in the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown Tournament, that also includes two CIAA schools, all of those schools are traditional NCAA II powers. We're still the youngest team in our conference - the Central Athletic Collegiate Conference (CACC). One thing is for sure: we will be a very mentally strong group of young men by the end of this season. We are actually a little ahead of where I thought we'd be at this point. The most important thing is that everyone understands that we are trying to build something here and that it will take a lot of hard work and time."
The Goldey-Beacom College Men's Basketball team is coached by Michael A. Colella, Sr. Colella has a degree in Criminal Justice and has been coaching since the mid 80's. The most notable was a seven year stint as an assistant coach at Sanford School in Hockessin, Delaware. During that period, from 1990 to 1997, Sanford won back-to-back state championships, the last school to do so in Delaware High School Boys' Basketball.
1998-1999 season recap. After almost a twenty year absence, GBC returned successfully to the court for the 1998-1999 season competing in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), Division II. The team posted an 11-19 record with all freshman players (6-2 in games decided by 5 points or less); playing one of the toughest schedules in the nation, which included 12 games against nationally ranked teams.
Among GBC's victories were BIG wins over Kutztown University (PA), Caldwell College (NJ), University of the Sciences (PA), and Teikyo Post (CT); with the latter three being nationally ranked teams. "With all freshmen (the tallest being 6'4") and with our schedule, I thought we might win 4 games tops," said Head Coach Mike Colella.
The team's leading scorer was 6'2" shooting guard Corey Cann, out of Philadelphia, who is also this year's student government president. Corey averaged 19.8 points per game, was the second leading scorer in the conference, and was named second team all-conference; he was the only freshman selected on the first, second, or third team.
